Chelsea FC’s Great Matches in 2012: Chelsea vs Napoli

New Interim Manager, Roberto Di Matteo was thrown straight in at the deep end with the seemingly impossible task of keeping Chelsea in the Champions League; they had to overcome the 3-1 deficit achieved in Italy, which brought about the sacking of young manager Andre Villas Boas. In this match, Chelsea’s old guard came to the rescue, Terry, Lampard and Drogba scoring three of the four goals on the night to silence their critics. They’re too old? These players didn’t get the memo. Chelsea had gone two up, scoring goals either side of the half time break. But then Napoli’s Inler came back with a scorcher from just outside the area in the 55th minute. With a mountain to climb, Chelsea never let themselves be defeated. Two more goals, a penalty from Frank Lampard and a 105th minute strike from Branislav Ivanovic, saw Chelsea come back to life. After a frankly abysmal performance in the first leg, it seemed like a completely different team. This wouldn’t be the last time in their historic Champions League campaign that Chelsea would seemingly rise from the dead…

Chelsea FC’s great matches in 2012: Chelsea FC vs Liverpool

A great match and subsequent triumph which has often been overlooked due to the historic match that took place in Munich two weeks later. But the 2012 FA Cup Final, wasn’t without drama. Liverpool thought their striker, Andy Carroll, scored a goal in the 81st minute (which would have been an equaliser), though it wasn’t given by the officials as it was deemed that the whole ball had not crossed the goal line. Cool goals from Ramires and Drogba sealed Chelsea’s 4th FA Cup victory in 6 years - the most dominant run of any club in the history of England’s premier domestic cup.
